A good time was had by all at Wichita Ski Club's at Kaw Lake, Oklahoma July 23rd through July 25th. We stayed at Coon Creek Cove, which is 8 miles east of Ponca City, Oklahoma on Hwy 11. John Kimball provided us with photos he took during the trip. If you weren't there, you missed out! Thanks again John for all your efforts to record the fun.
Wichita Ski Club had a great time on the camping trip at Cheney Reservoir, on the west side of the lake in the Ninnescah Sailing Association camp area on May 21st & May 22nd. John Kimball provided us with photos he took during the trip. He also included a Cheney 2010 video slideshow of the trip he put together. Thanks John for all your efforts to record the fun.
Wichita Ski Club again did well at the Flatland Ski Race in Winter Park, Colorado in January 2010. John Clark has once again sent in a bunch of his photos of the entire event from start to finish and including some après skiing too. Thanks John for keeping us up to date online.
The searchable results of Flatland 2010 will be available online soon.
At 7:00 pm on Tuesday, January 26, 2010, sixteen members of the Wichita Ski Club boarded a shared bus with the Tulsa Ski Club to attend the 46th Annual Flatland Ski Association races in Winter Park, Colorado. Approximately three to four hundred skiers attended.
We checked in to the Zephyr Mountain Lodge at 7:30 Wednesday morning where the lodging was the epitome of ski in/ski out. Just walk out the door, go between two hot tubs, put on your skis and ski one hundred feet to the Zephyr lift. At the end of the day you could ski from the bottom of Mary Jane to the ski rack next to the hot tubs. There was one casualty on the first day when Jennifer Alexander injured her knee at the top of Mary Jane. Her skiing experience ended with a trip off the mountain wrapped up in a ski patrol sled.
Wednesday night Nancy Meyers hosted a wine and cheese party that was not limited to wine and cheese. It also included summer sausage, various dips and snack crackers and was highlighted by smoked sardines. Thursday's schedule included the open race which is a race designed for the more experienced racer and is more difficult than the standard NASTAR course. (experienced racer means racing experience and not age although our own J. D. Frederick received a gold medal in both categories)
The snowshoe race was Thursday evening. This is a relay race that consists of four racers, one of which must be a female, running a 1/8 mile lap in snowshoes. Our team racers were Lisa Hartnett, Paul Warren, Andy Glatt, and David "rocket man" Pauly.
Thursday night was the welcome party for the purpose of becoming acquainted and reacquainted with the members of the other clubs. A buffet dinner was followed with drinking and dancing to the music of a DJ until 11:00 pm. Max Marsh became reacquainted with a Tulsa member and for the rest of the trip was the recipient of romance advice from his roommates Vern Imes and David Pauly. Only Cupid knows what will develop.
Friday was race day. For the majority of FSA racers, this is a challenging race where each racer in given two runs. The ski was blue, the sunshine bright, and there was no wind. This made for excellent race conditions. Medalists for the Wichita Ski Club were J.D. Frederick, Herb "Ski Hog" Schnoetzinger, Nancy Meyers, David Pauly, Lisa Hartnett, Paul Warren, Tatyana Bobrova, and Max Marsh.
Saturday was again bright and blue and the open race was held. This race is for first time racers and the competitors for Wichita were Charlie Graham and Ileen Pena. Jennifer Alexander was eligible but because of the previously mentioned injuries she had been placed on injured reserve. Late afternoon on Friday and Saturday some of our members and members from Kansas City, Tulsa, and Oklahoma City clubs had a wine and hot tub party. This reporter attended neither event and therefore unsubstantiated rumors will not be published. The awards banquet was held Saturday night and was again followed with the DJ until 11:00 pm.
Sunday had no scheduled events and was spent skiing, shopping and relaxing followed by a (this time non-eventful) bus ride home. The 47th Annual Flatland Ski Association races will be held at Steamboat Ski Resort from January 25 through January 30, 2011. Mark your calendars.
We were again camping and boating at Fall River State Park. Here's some photos thanks to Seth Roland to show why this was the best summer party of the year so far. Thanks also to Trip Captains John Hough and Seth Roland. We told you that if you didn't go that you would wish you had and this proves it!
First, our longtime member Seth Roland submitted a few of his photos of the past, a houseboat trip in 1987. Now another longtime member, Lou Myers, has sent us some of his golden oldie photos from the 1960's. If you recognize yourself or any other members having a good time in one or more of these, please leave your comments at our Flickr photos.
Would you like more information on the Wichita Ski Clubs membership and history? We have half a century of adventures and a few of the original members to prove it. Visit our club history to find out.
Each year we present this trophy of the Copper Boot to the person (or persons) whom the board feels has gone above and beyond in helping promote the fun and camaraderie that the Wichita Ski Club is all about. You could be next!
