The Wichita Ski Club organizes several ski and snowboard trips per season. These are not only for our membership but we also welcome guests to join us for some fun in the snow.

It's always nice to think of snowy Colorado and Utah. when Kansas temperatures are in the 90s and its time to plan your winter ski vacations! For the 2010-11 ski season we are offering three ski trips to wonderful ski resorts: Crested Butte, Steamboat (Flatland Ski Association Races), and Park City, Utah. I hope to see you there!
We are going to continue the $75 discount for on time ski trip payments this year, but there are some changes. The trip discount policies for Crested Butte and Steamboat are different and we are not offering a trip discount for Park City.
For Crested Butte in order to take advantage of the $75 discount:
In order to take advantage of the $75 discount for Steamboat:
Payments can be made to the trip captain, a board member, or post marked by due date to Wichita Ski Club, PO Box 2451, Wichita, KS 67201. If you are unable to meet these requirements, you will need to pay the regular price for the trip. Think of this as a coupon for $1.00 off brownies at the supermarket. If you take the coupon in to Walmart or Dillons after the expiration date, you pay full price for those delicious brownies and they are well worth it.

Crested Butte and The Wichita Ski Club seem to have a love affair. Each time we have gone to Crested Butte it has snowed and snowed and snowed! And once again this year the lift tickets are inclusive! It is a beautiful resort with a quaint little town a free short shuttle ride away.
When: Thursday evening, 12 Dec 2010 through Monday early morning, 13 Dec 2010
We will be staying at the same place as the last three visits to Crested Butte, The Lodge in Mountaineer Square located near Red Lady and Silver Queen express lifts. It is a beautiful resort with a quaint little town a free short shuttle ride away. It is gorgeous and most importantly on the courtyard at the base of the mountain. The Avalanche is a fabulous restaurant/bar also at the base that is a great place to eat good food for any meal of the day. If we arrive earlier than check in time to The Lodge, we will stop at McDonald's and have breakfast. If we arrive near check in time we will go straight to The Lodge and check in. Again The Avalanche is a wonderful place for breakfast. On the trip home we will have pizza on the bus for dinner. This allows us to ski longer on the day of departure.

The FSA races are at Steamboat this year. We were there 3 years ago for the races as well and had a fantastic time. It is truly a beautiful place! If you have never attended a FSA event, it is a lot of fun. There are eight other Flatland Ski Clubs that all converge along with WSC to ski fast, play hard, and meet new friends and some to drink a lot of free beer courtesy of Boulevard Brewery at FSA events. We have priced the FSA activity pass separately for those who would just like to go skiing and not race or attend the Welcome Banquet or Awards Banquet, but remember the activity pass includes lots of free beer at these FSA events.
When: Tuesday evening, 25 Jan 2011 through Monday early morning, 31 Jan 2011
We will be staying at The West 250 yards from the Steamboat Gondola. It has an outdoor heated pool and 2 indoor hot tubs, complimentary ski storage, and a private guest shuttle to skiing, shopping, dining, and entertainment. They also offer complimentary morning coffee and donuts in the clubhouse. Activity Passes and Lift Tickets will need to be purchased separately.
FSA Activity Pass includes welcome party, racing activities, and awards banquet.

Let’s go West and ski several different ski resorts a short distance from a duplex in Park City Mountain Resort! We will be within 15 minutes to 1 hour of Deer Valley, The Canyons, Brighton, Solitude, Snowbird, and Alta.
When: Saturday, 26 Feb 2011 through Friday, 4 Mar 2011
The cost of the trip includes a non-smoking duplex within walking distance of Park City Ski resort. The duplex has a hot tub that is shared with the adjoining duplex. This is a fly out trip and flight arrangements are to be made on an individual basis. The shuttle from Salt Lake City to our duplex will be about $75. If all who plan on going on this exciting excursion fly out together, we can split the cost of the shuttle. This trip is subject to cancellation if we do not have 7 members committed to going by January 1, 2011.

Perhaps the most convenient, comfortable way to travel too Colorado is via a sleeper bus.
A uniquely designed bus, a sleeper buses transport approximately 40 people arranged in booths, with four seated comfortably per booth. Each booth changes into two bunk beds so people can lie horizontally and sleep while driving overnight to their destination. Passengers typically bring a pillow and either a blanket or sleeping bag. Some also bring sleeping aids and earplugs.
Traveling this way has many advantages:
Skiing and snowboarding can be enjoyed in many ways. While at the resorts you may see people using alpine skis, snowboards, telemark skis, cross country skis, and other types of specialized equipment. Regardless of how you decide to enjoy the slopes, always show courtesy to others and be aware that there are elements of risk that common sense and personal awareness can help reduce. Observe the code listed below and share with other skiers and riders the responsibility for a great mountain experience.
Always stay in control and be able to stop or avoid other people or object.
People downhill ahead of you have the right of way. It is your responsibility to avoid them.
You must not stop where you obstruct a trail, or are not visible from above.
Whenever starting downhill or merging into a trail, look uphill and yield to others.
Always use devices to help prevent runaway equipment.
Observe all posted signs and warnings. Keep off closed trails and out of closed areas.
Prior to using any lift, you must have the knowledge and ability to load, ride and unload safely.
It's for everyone's benefit to remember the code and be safety conscious.

Remember, you will be out all day in temperatures in which you would normally spend only minutes.
The concept of dressing a person in a cold-dry climate is to dress in layers. This means that layers next to your body should be porous, to trap air, which will insulate. Those layers should be covered with a layer that is wind proof and preferably water repellent. The layers next to your skin should be made of a natural fiber, as natural fibers can absorb moisture without losing the insulating quality. Moisture is your greatest enemy because it destroys the insulating quality of any clothing. Perspiration, of course, from the tired, overworked body and snow from the outside, will cause this loss should your outer shell not be water repellent. Layers can vary from 2 to 10 depending on how cold it is and how hard you ski. So, the absorbent insulating layer or layers covered by the wind proof layer, preferably water repellent is the rule.
Wind chill index tells more about clothing needs than temperature. Dress warmly! You can always remove inner layers. Keep your feet and hands warm and keep your bottom dry and have fun!
